How Does the media eFFECT natual disasters?
Science In the media is positively influencing society. Media is seen and used daily, whether you are using Facebook, listening to the radio or watching the daily news on chanel 10. The purpose of the media is to notify people of what is going on locally and globally. Preparation, awareness and understanding of disasters is a trait that is found in many people. This is due to the wide availability of the information through the media. The media notify society on how to properly prepare for a natural disaster such as a volcano. The information is accurate and effective. Mount Vesuvius eruption which occurred in 79 ad is an example of the lack of knowledge and preparation techniques. It is estimated that the eruption killed about 2000 people and the entire town of Pompeii and Herculaneum where covered in cooled lava , why was this eruption so significant to society and infrastructure? This eruption was so significant due to the lack of knowledge which in the 21st century is mostly exposed through media. The lack of knowledge was the reason the death rate was so high, no-one knew what was happening and where not exposed to the resources available today for example the Lahar system (explained in questions 4-detect). Kirishima, japan eruption in 2010 spewed tones of ash out of it. Meteorological agencies where able to notify civilians of the alert level and safety and dangerous zones. Thijs eruption which was at a level three severity. It was less destructive to society and the infrastructure due to the knowledge exposed through the media. Agencies where able to send alerts of the volcanic activity before the eruption. Technologies also where able to predict that an area classifies as dangerous/ hazards was at a radius of 1 mile.
On the other hand, he media does not have the resources to stop a natural hazard, they do not have the ability to confine a hazard to a certain area. so how is the media linking to reducing the impact on society and infrastructure? Thousands of volcanic eruptions have occurred in 2014, people have been killed, houses have been destroyed. The media can only advertise what is going on. They are not the government who has to rebuild infrastructure after a eruption, did you see the media repaying the $116 million that the Indonesian government needs to rebuild infrastructure on/near the Merapi volcano in Indonesia after the 2010 eruption? Do you see them creating barriers that restrict lava flow like those in Sicily? The media is only useful off alerts, they can not stop a volcanic eruption or predict it. When a geologist sends alerts that a volcano is becoming active the media are only able to warn people. By than it is usually too late and people end up not being properly prepared. The media can only address not resolve and natural disaster.
